Applications now open for the Fuller Landau Family Business Award
First edition of the award in collaboration with the John Molson School of Business
MONTREAL, February 21, 2011 – The John Molson School of Business at Concordia University and Montreal-based accounting firm Fuller Landau LLP announce today that they have begun their search for nominees for the inaugural edition of the Fuller Landau Family Business Award.
The Fuller Landau Family Business Award recognizes family-owned businesses, based in Quebec, whose policies and business practices have had a positive impact on the community and stimulated economic growth through local and regional entrepreneurial ventures. The award was created in June 2010 after Concordia University announced a $60,000 donation from Fuller Landau Montreal to support undergraduate and graduate students who specialize in entrepreneurship studies and encourage local family-business development.
“Family businesses play an important role in supporting and stimulating local communities,” said Michael Newton, Managing Partner of Fuller Landau LLP. “A vast majority of our clients are family-owned businesses. Fuller Landau is happy to lend its support to assist in recognizing the hard work and success of these enterprises that help fuel the local economy.”
JMSB Dean Sanjay Sharma says the gift will help JMSB students further explore the multi-faceted and dynamic nature of entrepreneurship studies. “We are delighted to support the development of family firms in the Montreal area and to promote the social contributions made by local family businesses.”
Winning nominations will be chosen based on business success, positive business and family linkages, multi-generational family involvement, contributions to the community and industry, as well as innovative business practices or strategies. Nominations will be reviewed by a panel of five independent judges, chaired by Pramodita Sharma, CIBC Distinguished Professor of Family Business, at Concordia University’s John Molson School of Business.
“We are thrilled to have a judging panel that consists of so many well respected and business savvy professionals,” said Ms. Sharma. “Quebec has no shortage of thriving family-owned businesses, so our panel has quite a task ahead of them. We are ready for the challenge and look forward to awarding the local businesses that have had a positive impact on our community.”
The panel of judges will consists of five distinguished business professionals that include: Dr. Michael Carney, Senior Concordia Research Chair for Strategy and Entrepreneurship; Mr. Terry Didus, Partner for Heenan Blaikie; Dr. Paul Shrivastava, David O’Brien Distinguished Professor of Sustainable Enterprise (John Molson School of Business); Ms. Michele Desjardins, President for Koby Consulting; and Mr. J. Sebastian van Berkom, President and CEO for van Berkom and Associates Inc. Mr. Michael Newton, Managing Partner for Fuller Landau, will serve as a non-voting member of the panel.
Judges will hand out awards in three categories: Small business, less than 25 full-time employees and less than $1 million in annual revenues; Medium-size business, 25-100 full-time employees or between $1 million and $5 million in annual revenue; and Large business, more than 100 full-time employees or over $5 million in annual revenues.
Award winners will be announced during the Fuller Landau Family Business Awards Ceremony evening at the John Molson School of Business on May 17, 2011. Winners of the Best Undergraduate and Graduate Student Family Business Paper awards will also be presented.
